Gloucester, lying close to the River Severn, is a city district in southwest England that the Romans founded in AD 97 under the rule of Emperor Nerva. The first charter was granted by Henry II in 1155. It is one of those cities in England that have more than one Coat of Arms.The first consists of the three Chevrons that belong to the Clare family and the second coat the “Tudor Coat” granted in 1538 on which are present the roses of York and Lancaster, a ceremonial sword and cap, and two horseshoes surrounded by nails, to represent Gloucester's historical association with ironworking and the boar's head of Richard III.
