About Gloucester

Gloucester, lying close to the River Severn, is a city district in southwest England that the Romans founded in AD 97 under the rule of Emperor Nerva. The first charter was granted by Henry II in 1155. It is one of those cities in England that have more than one Coat of Arms. The first consists of the three Chevrons that belong to the Clare family and the second coat the “Tudor Coat” granted in 1538 on which are present the roses of York and Lancaster, a ceremonial sword and cap, and two horseshoes surrounded by nails, to represent Gloucester's historical association with ironworking  and the boar's head of Richard III.

Churches

Gloucester is home to a number of churches and chapels.According to Oliver Cromwell, “the city had more churches than godliness.”.  Gloucester is also known to have played host to the first Sunday school in England started by Robert Raikes in 1780. Some of the well known churches in Glocester are :

  • St Mary de Lode
  • St Mary de Crypt
  • St Michael’s Church
  • St Nicholas’s Church

Just in the vicinity of the St Mary de Crypt church are the monasteries and remains of the Greyfriars and Blackfriars. In 1974 during the construction of a Boot store on Brunswick and Eastgate Street, the remains of Romans were found.
