About Warwick

Warwick

Warwick is a county town located in Warwickshire, England. Warwick is situated on River Avon, west of Leamington Spa and Whitnash and 11 miles south of Coventry. According to United Kingdom 2011 census, Warwick had a population of 31,345.

Humans settled at this place during the Neolithic period, and since the 6th century, there is continuous habitation in this area. Warwick Castle was constructed in 1068 as part of Norman Conquest of England. Warwick School is said to be the oldest boy’s school in the country. In 1088, earldom of Warwick was established and earls managed this town in the medieval period and built walls of the city, of which Westgate and East gate survive. Later Castle developed into Stone Fortress and then the country house, now it is a popular tourist attraction of Warwick.

In 1694 during the medieval period, Great Fire of Warwick damaged this town to a great extent. In 1919 Racing Club Warwick F.C was founded. Warwick is administered by Warwick District Council.

History

In 1801, its population was over 5500. During this time, it was a fair sized town. At the beginning of 19th century, this city grew rapidly but later on growth slowed. In 1951, its population goes to 15,000.

During the 19th century, this town improved. In 1810 some streets of Warwick were cemented, and Warwick gained gas supply in 1822. Clean water supply and sewers were dug in the late 19th century. In 1866 in Warwick Public Library was opened. In 1852 Warwick got railway. From 1881 Horse-drawn trams were used to go from Warwick to Leamington. At the starting of the 20th century, these Horse-drawn trams were replaced by Electric trams. In 1965, the Warwick University was founded. Now the population of Warwick is 22,000.
